The Mecki Mark Men, have perplexed those who claim pop music cannot be avant-garde and still remain pop. to be avant-garde, the sound or style must be the first of its kind, with group members mastering their instruments with the belief that rules were made to be broken. they have challenged the statement that avant-gardists care more for their experiments than the audience. The four pop and jazz musicians form Sweden play their own music exclusively and with deep involvement.

Dissatisfied with a passive listening audience, the Mecki Mark Men work for physical reaction stopping at nothing to achieve it. A fan relates a performance...

"9:30 PM at the Spring Theatre in Stockholm suburb. On stage, the Mecki Mark Men are tuning their instruments-their serious, slightly strained faces, are highlighted by shifting, flickering light. They speak to each other softly as if they were alone. Instruments tuned and ready, tenseness fine, they begin to play in response to an unheard downbeat.

Mecki begins the ritual with a thrust of force pulling every note from the organ's keyboard, backed by a chanting, wailing song. Pelle loses his natural gentleness as he tames the drums and cymbals into submission, Kenny, head bowed, hair in front of his eyes separating him from the audience, is alone with his guitar, and he wants it that way. Mecki picks up his flute-demons retreat as the private pied piper plays.

Everything slows down, Mecki Mark Men trail off-stop-baffled, as if they'd gone too far. Five, ten, twenty seconds of silence-a burst of hot, raw music, replenishes the moments of quiet. Suddenly, sharply, they pull down to a hard, jolting stop. EXPLOSION! Mecki brings back the demons with lighting in his fingers. Bella dances-graceful, light, nimble. Pelle's drums, cymbals, stool, coast the air in wild contrast. Bella and Kenny sing-rebelling choir boys weaving webs of vibrations, ENOUGH-Mecki scratches his beard with the mike, the only sound that hasn't been heard. Another beginning-heads bowed, eyes sheltered by hair, something new being demanded of each instrument. Bass and guitar resurrected, intense-they are improvising now. Sounds are squeezed from the organ's keyboard. For now, they've captured the truth.

The music of Mecki Mark Men is powerful-too powerful for some.
